79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly  – From September 10th to 28th, the United Nations met in New York to discuss many global issues. The theme for this meeting of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) was: "Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations." Specific topics that were discussed include the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, climate change, and the reform of the U.N. Security Council. In regards to the war in Gaza, many countries acknowledged that there was a humanitarian crisis occurring and that an immediate ceasefire was necessary. United States’ president Joe Biden was the middle man, saying both Israelis and Palestinians deserve “security and peace.” The United States, along with Qatar and Egypt, put forth a resolution that called for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Biden also mentioned the war in Ukraine, saying, “We will not let up on our support for Ukraine.” In addition to the discussion of these topics, another proposal was made called the Pact for the Future. This agreement covers how the U.N. plans to act in regards to “human rights, gender and sustainable development.”

Upcoming Meteor Showers

October is going to be filled with shooting stars filling up the night sky throughout the month. On the night of October 8th around midnight, you can look towards the Draco constellation for the Draconid shower. The Draconid shower only comes along every so often. Most recently, it came in 2018, and it is expected to return in late March of 2025. Later on in the month, on October 21st, look towards Orion’s Belt for the Orionids. These meteors only come along every 76, as they are debris from Halley’s Comet.
