Possible Community Service Opportunities

We all know the struggle of finding those service hour opportunities in and out of school. So, to get started on your hours if you are a freshman, or to top them off if you are a senior, some good places to look for volunteering opportunities are food banks, smaller organizations, and environmental organizations.

One place to start is the Autism Society Central Virginia. On October 16th, this organization is hosting an event that needs volunteers. Students 16 and older are encouraged to attend! The event takes place from 4:00PM - 8:00PM. Another great place to start is the Friends of Brian Park Association. They are constantly holding clean-ups that will be accepted as volunteer hours. Learn more about their organization here: https://friendsofbryanpark.org/pages/about-bryan-park.php

Have a great time volunteering and making a difference in your community!

Movie Recommendations for a Cozy Fall Night

As students start what will become an eventful–and likely stressful–fall, we could all use a relaxing movie night. I myself am a strong believer in the potent power of a comfort movie when times get tough and one needs an escape–even for just a couple of hours. Some excellent selections for the crisper fall nights are as follows: When Harry Met Sally, Little Women (Greta Gerwig adaptation), Mona Lisa Smile, Twilight, Dead Poets Society, Remember the Titans, If Beale Street Could Talk, Practical Magic, Good Will Hunting, and Mystic Pizza. Many of these films take place against the autumnal backdrop of New England or a quaint, leafy town. Not only are the storylines particularly endearing and comforting, but these movies are also visually beautiful. We love nostalgia, memories of a time before our time, and these movies serve up more than enough of that. To fully reap the benefits of a proper movie night, you’ll also need popcorn, hot cider or tea, and some kind of sweet treat; my favorite is caramel M&Ms.

Donald Trump Assassination Attempt (Again)

Donald Trump is the apparent victim of a second assassination attempt, this time taking place at his Palm Beach golf course on Sunday. Secret Service agents fired at a man armed with an AK-47 near or on the course. Spokespeople for Trump report that he is “safe and unharmed,” and local police forces report that a suspect is in custody. This second incident occurred just two months after Trump was shot in the ear at a Pennsylvania rally. According to local police, the man was about 300 to 500 yards from Trump when he was spotted by Secret Service agents and shot at. Besides an AK-47, the man was equipped with two backpacks filled with ceramic tiles and a GoPro camera. Because Trump is not the sitting president, Secret Service presence is limited, allowing for this glaring breach in security. After the second assassination attempt of this election season, security is sure to be doubly prepared to protect the candidate as we are fast approaching election day.
