North Korean Troops in Russia

Ukraine and South Korea have corroborated that North Korean troops are spotted in Russia. North Korea and Russia refute these claims and the Kremlin has entirely dismissed them as “fake news.” However, the United States has also affirmed that the report is true ahead of a likely North Korean deployment of forces into Ukraine. This comes three years into the Russia-Ukraine conflict, at a critical point where both Russia and Ukraine are facing serious losses and losing steam. The potential for North Korean deployment of forces would not only bolster pro-Russia troop numbers and forces in Ukraine, it will also solidify North Korea’s support of the war in Ukraine and move North Korea and Russia into a new stage of allyship. The development is “highly concerning” for the United States and South Korea has called for the immediate withdrawal of all North Korean troops from Russia.

Hamas Leader Killed in Gaza

On October 16, Israel Defense Forces troops killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. His killing was the result of a routine patrol and a chance encounter in the southern Gazan city of Rafah. The death of the leader has sparked hope in some Palestineans that peace may be made. For others, it is a sign that the conflict must continue until Palestine can prevail. Sinwar’s death opens a brief window for U.S. Secretary of State Blinken to urge a ceasefire and peace negotiations to start.
