The Year of Taylor

By: Keira Kinnier

As 2023 came to a close, Taylor Swift made headlines once again as TIME declared her "Person of the Year." This may come as little surprise for many, given her constant  achievements gracing headlines throughout the year. In fact, in 2023, The Jabberwock alone  published nine separate articles on Taylor Swift.

So what makes people deem Swift as the "Person of the Year?" How is she able to capture everyone's  attention constantly? The answer is simple: her hard work and dedication to her craft.

This past year, Swift released new versions of her previous albums Speak Now (Taylor's Version) and 1989 (Taylor's Version), began her global tour, The Eras Tour, and released a Golden Globe-nominated film of said tour, all while continuously working in recording studios for the re-releases of her remaining albums.

On July 7, Swift re-released her first album of the year, Speak Now (Taylor's Version) .  This re-release occurred during the height of Swift's tour, and on the night of its announcement, Swift brought out a few special guests to join her on stage: ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner and actress Joey King. This held great significance to "swifties," Swift's fans, both inside and outside  of the stadium. Joey King originally featured in the music video for Swift's song "Mean" when  the album was originally released. The stadium rippled with excitement at the sight of Lautner, who is the focus of a number of Swift's songs in Speak Now (Taylor's Version).  During this same night, Swift surprised the fans by deciding to hold a live release of the music video for "I Can See You," featuring both King and Lautner. Swift was able to leave her fans floored and continue providing the incredible show that is The Eras Tour. Only a few months later, in late October, Swift released the album 1989 (Taylor's Version). This album, featuring six "from the vault tracks," followed in Speak Now (Taylor's Version) 's footsteps, as it immediately topped charts upon its release.

Aside from the two hit album releases, The Eras Tour itself has been an ongoing  phenomenon, completely reworking the concert industry. The three-hour show takes fans through  each "era," or album, Swift has. She is singing and dancing relentlessly, putting on a once in a  lifetime experience for her fans. Currently, the tour has grossed more than one billion dollars,  and that figure will only continue to grow as Swift carries on across the globe. Along  with the actual tour, Swift released the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour this year, allowing her fans who could not attend the ability to experience her dazzling performance still. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category. This nomination was rightfully deserved, as the movie has grown to become the highest grossing concert film of all time.

Swift's success stems from a number of factors, but at its core, she is able to thrive due to  her sheer hard work. The effort she places in every thing she releases is evident, and it is exemplified in the record-breaking statuses of her albums, tour, and movie. Thus, the title  "Person of the Year" is more than deserved. She puts the care and effort into her work, and earns  the outpouring of love and support from her fans.
