The Vorpal Sword: Relaunched!
By: Tanvi Palavalas
Created towards the end of 2023, The Vorpal Sword may have appeared on your Instagram feed. Inspired by the Governor School’s former satirical paper, The Vorpal Sword has been relaunched and revamped, now in the form of an Instagram page. Although not officially affiliated with MLWGS, the publication is led by a Maggie Walker student, and different articles provide a comical spin on various events occurring on campus.
While conversing with a peer who pointed out that The Vorpal Sword was an actual club at school that published articles, similar to The Jabberwock, Chiara Wells ('24) realized that this could be something brought back to life. Understanding that it would be "for the fun of it," later that day, she created a graphic for the relaunched publication, came up with an idea for an article, and created an Instagram account where the publication would be housed. Comparing itself to the popular American media publication The Onion, The Vorpal Sword hopes to poke fun at various ideas related to the Governor’s School and also brighten up some students' days. Wells describes managing this publication as "something that keeps me surviving" with the stress of senior year but also as "a little hobby on the side."
Serving as the Editor-in-Chief, Wells acts as the main contributor to The Vorpal Sword, with a few friends aiding in writing articles and providing quotes. Wells aims for The Vorpal Sword to attract more members, as having more contributors would allow for more creativity and enable The Vorpal Sword to continue after she graduates this spring.
