The Power of the Poms: Maggie Walker’s Dance Team!

By Callie Pinar

The MLWGS Dance Team is led by Callie Pinar (‘24) and Keira Kinnier (‘25) and is sponsored by Senior Counselor Kimberly Forquer. Known for their pom poms, so far the team has performed twice for the entire school and twice at basketball performances.

Consisting of roughly eleven to thirteen dancers with a variety of different dance backgrounds, Dance Team began this year by gracing the stage in front of the school’s iconic front steps during Fall Fest. The pieces “Womanizer” and “I Wanna Go” by Britney Spears were featured in this act, along with the newest members of the team: the poms. The pom poms were originally implemented into the performances by Pinar and Kinnier as a means to keep the audience entertained and engaged for the duration of the 2-3 minute performances. And the poms did just that. With a roaring audience at Fall Fest, it was evident the dancers needed to give this piece a second run to shine before retiring it. The Fall Pep Rally provided them with this opportunity as students in the bleachers once again adored the performance. From friends recording to teachers and staff singing and dancing along, the love and adoration for the energy the team brings to a crowd is as apparent as the sparkle the poms bring to the team.

On January 6th, the dancers performed a third and fourth time for both the JV and Varsity boys basketball teams. After overwhelming applause proving the poms were appreciated in the dancers’ initial two performances, they were brought back for a second time when the team entertained a crowd of players and parents during halftime at both games. Songs such as “Crazy In Love” by Beyonce and “On the Floor” by Jennifer Lopez were used to hype up the audience and showcase the multitude of skills the dancers have acquired and begun to master as the year has progressed.

Speaking on her experience with the team, Addyson Hoover (‘26) stated, “I’ve really loved the experience of being around such a wonderful group of people that also enjoy dancing as much as I do. I’ve never really been on a team before and it’s been such a great experience to be able to rely on people not just for dance but to also have them there for me in general. I think the year has gone really well and I’ve had a great time performing for the school and the parents at various functions. I hope that incoming freshmen and the rest of the student body will take an interest so more people can take part in such a great experience.” The journey these girls are traveling upon continues to prove the dance team is not only a performing group, but also a sisterhood.

Throughout the years, the Dance Team has had a legacy for being a place of free expression and fun, as embodied by the team lighting up the stage with each performance. Just as the simple pom poms bring unity to the dancers, they also invite the audience to engage with the team on a deeper level and take a peek at the sorority-like friendship the dance team has created, something the team hopes to carry on for years to come.
