The Highlight of the Season: MLWGS Fall Festival
By: Indira Mudinur
Under large tarps, Fall Fest 2023 hid from the constant current of rain. With the “rain or shine” policy, Fall Fest 2024 seemed to be approaching the same fate. However, the raging Hurricane Helene made it impossible to organize booths or conduct performances. Just two days before the original date for the event (9/27), an email was sent out to all the students and staff announcing the postponement of Fall Fest to October 11th.
With this change, the festival was enjoyed by all in clear and warm weather. Performances were able to be showcased without the constraint of a tent; however, the changed date prevented the Maggie Walker band department from showcasing their well-prepared pieces. The last minute change conflicted with the director’s prior commitments, and the performance wouldn’t have been possible in his absence. Regardless of the minor setbacks, the show did go on, with standout performances from the MLWGS Orchestra and Bhangra Team.
With returning alumni and the growing musical interest at the school, the massive orchestra ensemble at Fall Fest was definitely a prominent part of the evening. “Holy cow,” Ms. Barnes, the orchestra director, says while recalling the day. The ensemble played two pieces, one of which was an extremely popular Lady Gaga mashup.
Tanvi Palavalas, captain of the Bhangra Team, details, “I feel a mix of adrenaline and pride. It’s always an incredible feeling to perform in front of a crowd, especially when we put so much effort, money, and time into coordinating and choreographing, but it’s even more rewarding to perform in front of the MLWGS community.” The team’s Fall Fest performance was after their noteworthy performance at Festival of India (FOI). Hasika Aaravabhoomi, another captain says, “With Fall Fest being moved after FOI, we thankfully were able to take a break for a week before starting up practices again to adjust for a shorter version of the FOI performance for the school.” Both of the performers illustrate how close the MLWGS Bhangra family has become and how some injuries on the team prior to Fall Fest were worrisome. Nonetheless, they persevered and delivered a remarkable performance.
One of the most iconic parts of Fall Fest is the booths. Many clubs in the school look forward to setting up these eye-catching, unique stands as a way of fundraising as well as showcasing the diversity among Dragons’ student organizations. Various language honor societies displayed the food and traditions of their corresponding cultures. Students also had the opportunity to showcase their talents by selling their art and organizing activities. Crochet Club sold impressive works made by current students and We Play Too, Economics, and Engineering Clubs entertained attendees with trivia and hands-on games.
Love was in the air at Fall Fest, with numerous students participating in the school-wide tradition of asking their sweethearts to homecoming with hand-made posters. Moreover, Fall Fest wasn’t attended only by Dragons, but also by friends and family. All were invited to get a taste of the MLWGS community while enjoying desserts and snacks like milkshakes and tanghulu. The welcoming atmosphere ensured that everyone in attendance had fun.
Ultimately, the 2024 MLWGS Fall Fest was an overall success. After getting postponed and avoiding stormy weather, the festival was littered with laughter, plastic cups, cookies, and memories that Dragons will cherish forever. Even as time moves on, the Fall Festival will always be remembered for its sweet treats and even sweeter memories for students, alumni, and the MLWGS community as a whole.
