Sports Feature: Winter Season

By: Devansh Kumar

The winter season of sports here at Maggie Walker has been nothing short of amazing. Athletic Dragons across various sports this season have put great shows of effort into their performances. Even with only about a third of the season having passed, we have already seen high scores and impressive wins in all our athletic departments.

To start, the varsity girls’ basketball team has held an incredible record of 5-1 for their season already.Their matchup against the Petersburg Crimson Wave would break their five game undefeated streak. Solid performances throughout the team have been highlights of their success and will be the key for their victories to come. The team will face West Point again this season, with the odds in the Dragons’ favor.

Jumping around to the JV boys’ basketball team, our athletes have gotten straight into the game. They started the season with a stunning win against West Point. A rough set of matchups followed, but the team still showed great efforts. Apart from play, the team has been significant in other ways as well. Lucca Fox (‘28) comments, “The JV basketball team has been a big part of my belonging in Maggie Walker. The team has made me feel welcomed and accepted in the MLWGS community.” With time to prepare and train over winter break, the team will be ready to take on new opponents in 2025.

Together with both of these teams, the varsity boys’ basketball team will soon also go up against West Point for the second time this season. Their past match together resulted in a great win for the Dragons, with last year’s JV boy’s basketball captain, Grant Tong (‘27) putting up 18 points on four three-pointers and identical exhibitions of skill from the rest of the team as well. Sublime offensive and defensive plays by the set of experienced players have been key in the past games, of which they have already won three.

Finally, the Maggie Walker swim team has been speeding across lanes already. Prior to the break, nineteen swimmers swam at the Hanover Hawk Invitational, with six of them making their debut swims for the team. Freshman Howard Luo remarks, “The meet was a great experience overall! As freshmen, we really stepped it up at finals and racked in a ton of points for the school in numerous individual events and relays. One memorable thing was the Christmas sing-along at the end.” On January 23rd, they will attend Trinity Episcopal School’s Senior Night Meet, where we can be assured they will kick up a splash.
