MLWGS Spring Musical: “Guys and Dolls”

By: Aaliyah Avent

In late February the MLWGS Drama Department, under the direction of Rick St. Peter and Kelsey Snyder, showcased their spring musical production of Guys and Dolls. This show, based on the book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, follows Nathan Detroit–played by Josie Mendicino (‘25)--who owns the oldest established floating crap game in New York City and has been engaged to Adelaide–played by Luna Forlano (‘25)--for over 14 years. When Nathan is short on cash to fund his game, he decides to bet high roller Sky Masterson, played by Max Whealton (‘25), $1,000 dollars that Sky won’t be able to take a girl on his trip to Havana, Cuba. Sky agrees, but unbeknownst to him, the girl in question is Sarah Brown, a strict and religious lady played by Avery Redmond (‘24). From there, the story follows both Nathan and Sky on their respective journeys of romance, lies, and gambling. Eventually, both relationships discover that love takes sacrifice, culminating in each couple getting married and living happily ever after.

Much of the cast and crew had positive remarks on the production. Jillian Wilson (‘25) was the lighting designer for the production and she said, “I had such a blast working on the musical; I loved being able to be creative and work on such a well-known classic Broadway show. The best part was that I didn't have any major problems at all.” The actors had positive reviews as well. Whealton reported that “My experience working on the musical was the most fun I've had all year.” Forlano agreed, stating that  “The experience was amazing and I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to be a part of it!” Viewers of the production also had positive remarks, with Reagan McMicheal (‘25) saying that “It was really good! I was amazed that Maggie Walker put on such a good show!” Ziggy Booker (‘25) also said “The show looked great and I enjoyed it, especially the aspect that I could tell all the actors and crew were having fun.”

Overall, the show created a lively buzz throughout MLWGS with everyone gushing about the songs and choreography. Although this was the last production of this school year, the anticipation of what next year will bring only grows stronger. Wonderful job, Drama Department!
