Making Music and Finding Community in Deadbeats

By Keira Kinnier

Every time Deadbeats, Maggie Walker’s student-led acapella group, performs for students during lunch, the crowd is practically overflowing! All of the students wait filled with anticipation to watch their peers put on a magical performance—and a magical performance is exactly what they get. Whether they are performing during the Winter Assembly or putting on a performance in the stair- well for Valentine’s Day, each and every member of Deadbeats has an incredible way of capturing the audience’s attention when they sing. This captivity creates a beautiful show where all the singers’ voices blend together perfectly. After every Deadbeats concert, one can always expect to hear chatter in the hallways pertaining to yet another amazing performance by their peers in Deadbeats.

Luna Forlano, a freshman in the club, speaks very fondly of the community within Deadbeats. “Everyone is so supportive, even if you make a mistake or sing the wrong note or something,” she says. “Everyone’s just really there to back you up and support you.” The relaxed atmosphere that Forlano loves in the Deadbeats community creates a comfortable performance for both the audience and singers, where the familiarity and support between the members add another facet of comfort to the Dead- beats performances. Forlano continued in her praise, describing a “chill” and judgment-free community. This community directly correlates to the success of Deadbeats, which has gained an ever-growing crowd at Maggie Walker.

Not only is the supportive community within the group amazing, so are their outstanding singing abilities! Each member brings something different to the acapella group, and their beautiful voices flow together to create a stunning final product. A crowd favorite during the Valentine’s show was the Dead- beats’ rendition of “Cherrywine,” sung originally by Hozier. Every student in the audience was completely captivated by the performance as they attempted to fully bask in the stunning voices of their friends. Deadbeats always puts on incredible performances for their peers, and Maggie Walker is proud to call this outstanding acapella group their own!
