During the week of October 10th through the 14th, MLWGS students showed their class spirit by participating in a multitude of activities. Through the dress-up days, lip sync battle, pep rally, and field day, students gained spirit points for their class every time they participated. Spirit Week also provided the classes with some friendly competition.
Throughout the week, each day had a theme for students to follow and dress up. Monday was Too Much Denim Day, Tuesday was Adam Sandler Day, Wednesday was Pajama Day, Thursday was Country versus Country Club Day, and Friday was Class Colors Day. When students were asked what their favorite dress-up day was, Daniel Asuncion (‘25) said, “My favorite dress-up day was Adam Sandler day because I already dress up like him and his outfits are very stylish.” Adam Sandler was a favorite among many of the interviewed students. Mary Lamberth (‘23) said she also liked Adam Sandler Day “because it was comfy, and it was funny to see everyone dressed up.” Another student, Mark Janssen (‘23), stated, "It was the most unique day, and I’ve never done an Adam Sandler-themed day before, so it was fun to do.” Aside from Adam Sandler Day, Pajama Day was another beloved favorite. Evelyn Hayter (‘26) said PJ day was her favorite “because it was comfy.” Luna Forlano (‘25) also stated that Pajama Day was her favorite “because that’s just like a classic, and I love getting to wear my slippers and PJs to school.”
The lip sync battles are another highlight of the week. The lip sync battle allows each class to have a group of students choreograph a dance and lip sync to different songs of their choice. This year, the seniors performed many songs such as “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd and Gucci Mane, “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj, and “Good Old Days” by Macklemore and Kesha. The juniors did a Disney-themed lip sync, focusing on various songs from popular Disney movies like High School Musical and Teen Beach Movie. The sophomores did a 2000s-themed lip sync where they used songs like “Single Ladies” by Beyonce and “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The freshmen performed well and lip-synced to the songs “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood, “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice, “We Are Young” by Kesha, and “Whatcha Say” by Jason Derulo. After all of the performances, the judges– who were MLWGS teachers– deliberated, and results came in: the seniors placed first, the juniors came in second place, the freshmen in third, and the sophomores in fourth place for the lip sync battle.
When students were asked about their thoughts on the lip sync battle this year, they provided various responses. Lamberth stated, "It was so cool that every grade had a group that planned out a performance instead of just making it up on the spot as some have done in the past. Obviously, the seniors were the best, but the juniors were a close second!” From another perspective, Asuncion stated, “This year's lip syncs were very cool, especially being able to participate in my grade's dance, definitely not an experience I will forget.” Forlano said, “I thought all the classes were really strong in their performance, and I liked how the seniors ended their performance!”
The pep rally was held in the gym this year and was filled with excitement and a lot of energy. The pep rally gives the upperclassmen on various fall sports teams a chance to compete against each other and provide recognition to those on the team. Janssen’s favorite part of the pep rally was “playing against the girls' field hockey team in field hockey as part of the boys' cross country team.” Lamberth commented, “The pep rally was so fun, and the seniors' entrance was so cool! It was nice to have all the grades back together again in the gym for the pep rally.” Another joint favorite event that took place during the pep rally was dodgeball. Maddy Dunaway (‘25) said her favorite part of the pep rally was “when the sophomores won dodgeball.” Hayter also stated that her favorite part was “watching dodgeball.” As another sophomore, Forlano, said, “My favorite part by far was the dodgeball tournament because I was really proud to see my class win.”
After the pep rally had come to a close, everyone began to migrate to the field, which started Field Day. Multiple events were happening simultaneously, and people ran all around to watch them. Kaci Johnson (‘25) said she enjoyed “tug of war because the whole school was watching.” Hayter said her favorite was “the three-legged race because I got to do it with my friend, and it was fun!” Janssen said, "My favorite event to participate in was the human pyramid. Even though my group didn’t win, it was still fun trying to strategize a little and figure out which layer of the pyramid would be best for people.” Lastly, Forlano said, “My favorite part of Field Day was the wheelbarrow races and ultimate frisbee because it was fun to cheer on friends!” At the end of Field Day, the points were tallied, and the seniors won, with the juniors in second place, the sophomores in third, and the freshmen in fourth place.
Spirit Week is a fantastic school tradition that helps give students a break and hopefully brightens students’ days. The pep rally and field day provided an excellent way to end Spirit Week and get everyone excited for Homecoming.
