Jingles and Jolly: The Winter Concert

By: Emma Notarnicola

As Maggie Walker moved into its winter holiday, the band, orchestra, and choir sent us off with a dazzling spectacle. Many amazing performers worked hard over the last few weeks leading up to break and provided the student body with a breathtaking show, as well as a lively sing-along at the end. The instrumentalists played skillfully, and the choir and the student a cappella group, Deadbeats, sang a collection of exciting and moving songs, putting us all in the holiday spirit.

Both the audience and musicians enjoyed the production. These artists walked out feeling proud of their accomplishments. Violinist Katherine Streeter (24) said, “I feel like the concert went really well.” The concert definitely demonstrated this through a mix of fun and emotional songs like “Mr. Grinch,” “Sleigh Ride,” and “Pines of Rome.” Everyone left felt invigorated for break, basking in the winter spirit. Jane Clare Bosher (‘24) described the show as “a spectacular experience.” Additionally, Yuna Chen (‘24) discussed the improvements this concert displayed saying, “The music department this year has been a lot better overall than it has been in the last few years, especially with the choir and intermediate band and orchestra.” The choir and Deadbeats club also performed at the concert singing more traditional songs that, though brief, rendered everyone astounded by their talent.

The event brought many exciting joyous feelings, but it was also the last Winter Concert for many seniors. Streeter stated, “I’m really sad that this was my last concert, but happy it went well. It was a good ending.” Though this will be a sad goodbye, there will be plenty of concerts in college where performers like Streeter can continue to demonstrate their skills.

Nevertheless, the concert featured tons of exciting moments. For example, orchestra teacher Ms. Barnes conducted in a full Grinch outfit, shocking the audience during her entrance. Streeter recounts this as one of her favorite parts. Bass clarinet player Grace Crislip (‘24) says, “The end of ‘Pines of Rome’ was my favorite part of the concert.” Many students concur with her sentiment, with Matilde Quilici (‘24) agreeing the piece was a notable part of the production as “the band and orchestra did a great job.”

Moreover, at the end of the performance the band, orchestra, and choir came together and performed a holiday sing-along that featured beloved songs such as “O’ Christmas Tree” and “Deck the Halls.” Students could joyfully sing along to these songs, adding an interactive element with the audience that kept everyone engaged and happy. Caroline DeGuenther (‘24) reflects this stating, “My favorite part was the sing-along, and my favorite song was ‘Deck the Halls.’”

Overall, there is no doubt that this concert was amazing, and the student body cannot wait to see more from our incredible music department in the future.
