Fall Into Fashion: Thoughts and Suggestions on Fall Fashion

By: Nate Stevens

Autumn is just around the corner, and with that, fall fashion is making its annual comeback. Neutral shades, long sleeves, and cozy fabrics are all key elements of this couture, and Grace Zhang (‘28) exhibits a fresh take on this style.

This month, Zhang wore a sleeveless, ribbed, white turtleneck with a black denim skirt, black socks, and black Converse. She paired this with a brown and gray cardigan and a bronze maple leaf necklace. When asked what inspired her to pair these pieces, Zhang credited her friend as well as Pinterest: “My friend mentioned how a cardigan looks nice with something sleeveless, like a turtleneck, off the shoulder. I had a cardigan but didn’t know how to pair it, but when she mentioned the sleeveless shirt, I just happened to have it and other complementing factors.”

Zhang  also mentions how Pinterest has inspired her interest in neutral tones, like the brown and gray cardigan she pulls off. She wanted a “comfy, coffee, fall neutral-toned kinda outfit,” and she definitely succeeded. The ribbed detailing in the turtleneck and the high collar makes the top look comfy and especially cozy with her fuzzy cardigan. The black jean skirt, socks, and Converse are staple pieces that compliment the outfit perfectly while adding to the composed feel of the outfit. The real statement piece is the metallic maple leaf necklace that simply screams autumn. The warm tone goes along well with the rest of the ensemble and fits in just right. The buttons on the cardigan are a great vintage yet “woodsy” final touch to complete the look.

Zhang says that she “dabbles in different styles often.” She says, “I mix and match all the time, like from more feminine to streetwear plus a lot of different styles. But, of course, sometimes I have to stick to a hoodie and sweatpants, so pajama days are a must. It's not slacking off; it's a balance.”

With fall on the horizon, layering, warm outfits, and different styles are making their way back into fashion, so Zhang may not be the only one trying different outfits and matches. After all, autumn is all about change, and style is no exception.
