Director Lowerre Presents FY24 School Budget Changes
By Akshaya Ramasamy
During a public hearing on March 16, 2023, Maggie Walker’s Director, Dr. Robert Lowerre, proposed a budget change for the fiscal year (FY24) that runs from April 2023 to March 2024. The total for the budget introduced to the Regional School Board is $10,590,000. While making this proposal, Dr. Lowerre took the necessary resources into consideration, as this supply of money is aiding and sustaining the outstanding students and staff of Maggie Walker.
Due to the additional slots requested by the Richmond, Henrico, Colonial Heights, and Dinwiddie districts, the total enrollment at Maggie Walker will be 783 students in the 2023-24 school year. The proposed budget was decided upon based on the increase of the student body and allows for any essential resource to be provided. To account for this new growth at Maggie Walker, there will be $901,543 added to the budget for crucial workforce investment, which includes more full-time teachers and a new part-time position for Coordinator of Strategic Engagement. This advanced role entails creating more developed training opportunities for faculty, specifically understanding cultural differences, and generating awareness of subjects related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). The funding split is $3,052,352 for state revenue and $7,288,957 in local funding, including tuition and other revenues needed to meet community expectations. These nuances within the budget will allow students to sufficiently showcase their talent and serve them with appropriate opportunities.
On the MLWGS website, proposed budgets from the past, a form to submit any welcomed feedback, and a detailed letter from Dr. Lowerre can be found. Throughout his update letter, Dr. Lowerre appreciates the collaboration with the many different counties that feed into Maggie Walker and the school’s general community.
