Club Highlight: Quiz Bowl
By: Risshi Naavaal
Quiz Bowl, the club where the nerdiest of nerds come together to engage in the studious activity of answering trivia questions for fun. Although it may seem like a light-hearted pastime, Quiz Bowl is a sport taken quite seriously by a handful of students at MLWGS. Those students are pretty skilled at it, too. They won first place at VHSL states last year and have ranked highly at two different national tournaments. But as every Quiz Bowler will tell you, it's more than just the wins.
I started Quiz Bowl back in 10th grade. We'd just come out of the pandemic year, and I was finally at Maggie Walker in person. After exploring different clubs, I stumbled upon Quiz Bowl when a friend dragged me to a practice. Looking back, that practice set the tone for the rest of my involvement with the club. I loved the vibe, the energy, and the compassion of my fellow peers sitting at the iconic Quiz Bowl room’s round table. Alex Percey ('24) also had a great first practice, saying, "I got fourteen questions in thirty minutes. From the first meeting, I was hooked." When I got my first question, I felt a sense of pride in myself and at the same time a desire to know more.
The club's most dedicated members spend their free time grinding away at the categories they are specializing in, the big three being history, literature, and science. We regularly attend local competitions, especially at VCU, to get some practice and, most importantly, to have fun! Of course, winning these competitions is the cherry on top. Lilith Holmes ('26) recalled a special moment last year, saying, "I got to hold the trophy!"
As a Quiz Bowl elder, I encourage you to join this club of nerds. We run practices during lunch Monday through Friday and after school practices Monday through Thursday. If you're new, come on after school on Monday or Tuesday, and if you're ready to step up your skills, then stop by after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We hope to see you there!
