ChatGPT and the Future of AI
By Aditya Badrayan
Regardless of your opinions on artificial intelligence (AI), you better pay attention because Chat GPT is here, and it's here to stay.
Chat GPT was created by Open AI in November 2022 as a test for what a powerful AI system can accomplish, and in return, it created a sensation across the globe with over 13 million individual users visiting the website every day since January 2023. The tool accepts questions and prompts, then scans the gargantuan amount of information on the internet to provide carefully curated responses depending on the verbiage of the question provided. One can ask Chat GPT virtually anything, from poem prompts to research questions.
But there’s more than just frivolous prompts that one can engage with in the ChatGPT interface. The search engine redefines the internet as a whole, changing the game for finding information. With the limitless possibilities for its AI functions, people are no longer restricted by their own creativity; instead, they can use AI to provide that for them. All they need to worry about is finding the right prompt. Now, technology giants like Alphabet Inc. (Google) and Microsoft are rushing to provide their own versions of these massive chat technologies, albeit with limited success. According to The Wall Street Journal, Google has been failing to advertise its efforts to rush for artificial intelligence, calling it a botched attempt to provide the technology.
With artificial intelligence being able to go as far as testing research hypotheses and providing solutions to legal problems, many working professionals are worried whether this new software may take over their own occupations. However, this is highly unlikely. Here’s the catch: although Chat GPT can issue responses, it lacks common sense. Unlike the AI we see in the movies, current AI only possesses the ability to scour for information that is relevant only to certain key words in the prompt, still making it obsolete in real-life situations.
Although Chat GPT is here, we still have a long way to go before we have to worry about it taking over. Currently, it is an extremely useful tool that can be applied to find answers to questions that might require hours of research to discover. With such an easy portal to the secrets of the internet, AI is revolutionizing information.
